| Bio: | Character Information Name: Gordon Buckley Race: Human (lame potential) Age: 64 Birthday: March 19, 1943 Origin: Neptune City, New Jersey, USA Occupation: Professor of Computer Science Online Handle: Callsign_SOL Magician Family: None Pact With: None Appearance: Some would say he's adopted an old fashioned sense of style in his old age. He wouldn't, because he refuses to believe he is old in that way, but he does admit it has certain appeals. He looks almost native in the way he dresses, but considering he doesn't sound native, he is unmistakably American. He enjoys a paper pusher's attire, generally accented with a vest. He also wears a monicle because it makes him look "damn cool." He often looks more boring than he is, mostly for that air of authority he has found looking boring provides. PB: Walter C. Dornez Background: Born during the Second World War, Gordon came into the world after his father had already taken to the field in the Pacific Theatre. Very little of interest happened until his father came home from Japan when he was six. His parents finally married, and his life entered a state of comfort that he hadn't found before. The economic boom that postwar America provided truly meant a great number of things were able to come into his life that would have been absent otherwise. His life was relatively comfortable until he graduated High School. He had been known as quite a nerd, however he had just enough of a charismatic appeal to dodge being a big target. His success in electronics during school made his decision to go into computers a simple one. The real problems came with his romantic life. Shirley Mullin was his high school sweetheart. She had been quite a target of other girls, and was quite the nerd herself. They married right out of high school, in 1961. However, Gordon's career kept being a very unstable thing over the years. Shirley also got involved in several protests of the war towards the end of the sixties, and Gordon was for the war at the time. Not even their two children managed to keep them together towards the end. They divorced in 1969, and they were on not very good terms. She managed to win the custody battle, and moved away. Gordon's life actually started to get better a relatively short time after that. In 1971 he got a contract to work on military computers. It was the boost he needed. When he finished his contract, he was contacted by several interested parties. He worked on developing home computers through the 70's and 80's. His social life consisted of being around other nerds. At a Tunnels & Trolls game, he met a nerd half his age... and fell in love once again. Michele Parker became his second wife in 1978. They had a child together, but not a very long amount of history. Michele fell in love with another woman while Gordon was engrossed in his work (which kept him very busy in the early 80's). They divorced in 1982, but kept on much better terms than his previous marriage. The 90's saw him join several smaller projects working with businesses, and the internet. He kept himself on the forefront of innovations, but never did anything particularly impressive, except manage to get called to work for a member of the Order towards the end of the 90's. Said Order member was particularly impressed with the way Gordon managed to teach them how to defend their databases from online attacks. He was made a generous offer (at the time) for his services, teaching at the university. Ever since, Gordon has made quite a name for himself as both a cruel taskmaster of the computer inclined, and quite a friend to have if you want expanded internet priviledges. Personality: It's difficult to put a finger on any one word that would describe him. He's been working with computers for forty-six years, but he seems fairly young for his age. He hasn't let age slow him down because he loves what he does. What he does is computers, and teaching other to use them properly, and to the best effect. It's not another job to him, it really makes a difference. Especially because he gets to do it with people who seem like future influencial members of society. That is not all he enjoys. While long walks on the beach are not exactly his cup of tea, he has been known to indulge his inner geek. His likes include various obscure metal bands, social video games, trolling message boards, and some roleplaying games. While he is quite vocal about hating Shadowrun 4th Edition, he actually has a soft spot for it that he would never admit to anyone. The dork is strong in this one. Gordon has always been at the very cusp of genius. He knows electronic systems, and has ever since childhood. Unfortunately, he is that second rate genius who you never hear about. Not quite good enough to make something completely revolutionary, but good enough to know he could have been the first if he could have figured it out moments sooner than he did. He has had his hands in what other computer wizards have done, and optimised them, but it was never the same thing. There was no spark that ever brought his ideas to the next level, or if there was, it was too late. Gordon has a weakness for women, there is little denying it. Work has been the only reason he hasn't been thrice divorced instead of only twice. Work and age. It is a little harder to find women when you are a 60+ guy who works with computers, and the teaching thereof. The Internet has failed him in his search for a third Miss Right, but that doesn't mean he's abandoning the ship. He's just being smarter about prospecting. Other: He has written a number of small open source applications since he joined the faculty. Mostly during holiday breaks when he has little else to do. Most of them have very little to do with the school, and some have little to do with anything. He has been working on a proper complaints alert for the IRC room that would alert logged-off operators to problems popping up. | |||||||
